The ancient city of Ibadan stood still on Thursday, August 7, 2025, as dignitaries, traditional rulers, and citizens gathered to honour the life and legacy of the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

The solemn lying-in-state ceremony was held at the iconic Mapo Hall, a venue steeped in historical significance and central to Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage.
Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne in July 2024 following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Dr. Mohood Lekan Balogun, joined his ancestors on July 7, 2025, after reigning for one year.
His brief but impactful reign earned him admiration from many for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering dedication to peace and unity in Ibadanland.

Among the notable attendees at the event were representatives of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; members of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII); the Ibadan Mogajis (family heads); and other prominent sons and daughters of the city. Their presence underscored the deep respect and affection the late monarch commanded across different sectors of society.
Speaking on behalf of the state government, Reverend Femi Ibikunle, the Special Adviser on Interfaith Affairs to Governor Makinde, paid glowing tributes to the departed royal father.
He described Oba Olakulehin as an articulate, thoughtful, and compassionate leader who consistently placed the welfare of his people above all else. According to him, the monarch’s commitment to religious harmony and social cohesion contributed significantly to the peaceful atmosphere that characterized his tenure.
Also delivering a heartfelt tribute, President of the Ibadan Mogajis, Asimiyu Ariori, commended the late king for living a life marked by honour, dignity, and service. He stressed that Oba Olakulehin’s contributions to the progress and stability of Ibadanland would remain unforgettable.

In a deeply emotional moment, the late monarch’s son, Prince Sunmbo Owolabi, expressed gratitude on behalf of the royal family. He thanked the CCII, Mogajis, and the entire Ibadan community for their unwavering support during this period of mourning. He also offered prayers for continued peace and prosperity in Ibadanland.
As part of the funeral rites, a Christian wake is scheduled to hold later in the evening at the New Olubadan Palace located in Oke-Aremo, within Ibadan North Local Government Area. The event is expected to draw even more well-wishers, both from within and outside Oyo State, as the city continues to honour one of its most revered traditional rulers.
