Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has assured that Nigeria will deliver a world-class African School Games in 2027, following the country’s successful bid to host the second edition of the continental event.

Nigeria beat out competition from Kenya and South Africa to secure the hosting rights, which were formally handed over during a symbolic flag presentation at the closing ceremony of the inaugural African School Games in Algeria on Tuesday.

“This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent,” Olopade said.

“Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence.”

Strong Finish in Algeria

Team Nigeria finished in fourth place at the maiden edition of the African School Games, securing an impressive 25 medals — six gold, 10 silver, and nine bronze — across 10 different sports.

They trailed only behind host nation Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia on the overall medals table.

A Statement of Intent

Olopade highlighted that the 2027 hosting rights align perfectly with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Mandate, describing it as a signal of Nigeria’s re-emergence as a continental leader in sports and youth development.

“Nigeria is fast returning to glory as the epicentre for sports excellence in Africa,” Olopade said.

“We’re also simultaneously growing our sports economy and enhancing our global image as a prime destination for international sporting events.”

“In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent.”

Track Record of Excellence

According to the NSC DG, Nigeria’s winning bid was bolstered by the country’s proven record in hosting top-tier sporting competitions, including the 3rd Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U-18/U-20 Championships, which earned widespread praise for exceptional organisation, athlete experience, and modern facilities.

Olopade also expressed gratitude to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for the confidence placed in Nigeria, assuring that preparations will begin immediately to meet and exceed expectations.

Looking Ahead

The 2027 African School Games promises to be a significant milestone in Nigeria’s sports journey, offering a platform for talented young athletes across the continent to compete, connect, and thrive — with Nigeria once again set to take centre stage in African sports development.
