West Ham United have confirmed that Michail Antonio will not be signing a new deal as a first-team player, ending a decade-long senior playing spell at the club.

However, negotiations are ongoing regarding a possible coaching or mentoring role within the club’s academy setup.

The 35-year-old forward has not featured for the Hammers at senior level since a serious car accident in December, which nearly claimed his life.

While Antonio has since made a return to light action—including appearances for Jamaica at this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup and a run-out with West Ham’s U21s in a pre-season friendly at Boreham Wood—he is not expected to be part of Graham Potter’s plans this season.

Speaking during the club’s pre-season tour in Atlanta last week, Potter stated that Antonio was “unlikely to be involved” in the first-team squad moving forward.

A Modern West Ham Legend

Antonio leaves behind an indelible legacy at West Ham. Signed from Nottingham Forest for £7 million in 2015, he went on to make 323 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 83 goals. He is West Ham’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, netting 68 goals in 268 top-flight matches.

The versatile forward played a key role in some of the club’s most memorable recent moments, including starting the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final, where West Ham defeated Fiorentina to win their first major trophy in 43 years.

He was also named Hammer of the Year during the club’s first season at the London Stadium in 2016–17.

Possible Academy Role in Sight

While his playing days at West Ham appear to be over, Antonio’s relationship with the club is set to continue. Ongoing discussions between both parties may lead to him taking up a position within West Ham’s academy, focusing on coaching and mentoring the next generation.

“Michail will always be a much-loved and respected member of the West Ham United family,” the club said in an official statement.

“As has been the case since December, the club will continue to support and assist him in his ongoing rehabilitation, offering him access to training, facilities and medical care if needed.”

A Fitting Farewell

Though not confirmed as a formal retirement, Antonio’s quiet exit from senior football at West Ham marks the end of an era. Loved for his energy, adaptability, and enduring commitment to the badge, he remains a fan favourite and a symbol of West Ham’s rise in recent years.

The club’s continued support and the prospect of a future coaching role only underline the high regard in which Antonio is held in east London.
