Federal Government Issues Flood Alert Across 19 States, 76 Locations Amid Torrential Rainfall Forecast



The Federal Government has issued a serious flood alert, warning of potential flooding in 19 states and 76 specific locations due to anticipated heavy rainfall over a five-day period. The projected dates for this weather event span from August 5 to August 9, 2025.


The warning was formally released on Tuesday by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, a unit under the Federal Ministry of Environment. The centre urged state governments, emergency agencies, and residents in vulnerable areas to take immediate and proactive measures to minimize risks and damage from potential floods.



This alert comes in the wake of recent devastating floods that already hit parts of Ogun and Gombe states on Tuesday. Additional reports indicate that states like Lagos, Plateau, Anambra, and Delta have also experienced various degrees of flood-related impact, emphasizing the urgency of the alert.



According to detailed forecasts provided by the centre, the following states and locations are at high risk of flooding:

South-South Region:

Akwa Ibom: Edor, Eket, Ikom, Oron, Upenekang

Cross River: Ogoja, Edor, Obubra

Delta: Already affected (additional alerts may follow)


South-East Region:

Ebonyi: Abakaliki, Echara, Ezilo

Anambra: Already experiencing flood impact


North-Central Region:

Benue: Agaku, Buruku, Gboko, Igumale, Ito, Katsina-Ala, Ugba, Vande-Ikya

Nasarawa: Keana, Keffi, Wamba

Niger: Kontagora, Rijau, Ringim

Plateau: Mangu

Kogi and Kwara: Not mentioned but possibly vulnerable due to geographical proximity


North-East Region:

Bauchi: Tafawa-Balewa, Azare, Jama’are, Kari, Misau, Jama’a

Gombe: Bajoga (with recent flooding already reported)

Yobe: Machina, Potiskum

Borno: Biu

Taraba: Donga, Takum

Adamawa: Not included in this forecast, but historically flood-prone


North-West Region:

Kaduna: Jaji, Kafanchan, Birnin-Gwari, Zaria

Katsina: Bindawa, Bakori, Daura, Funtua

Kano: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano city, Karaye, Tundun-Wada, Wudil, Kunchi

Kebbi: Bagudo, Birnin-Kebbi, Bunza, Gwandu, Jega, Kalgo, Kamba, Kangiwa, Shanga, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, Yelwa, Gauri-Banza

Sokoto: Sokoto, Wamakko

Zamfara: Anka

Jigawa: Diginsa, Gumel, Dutse, Gwaram, Hadejia, Miga




In light of this forecast, the Ministry of Environment has called for:

Strengthened preparedness from State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs)

Public awareness campaigns in vulnerable communities

Clearing of drainage systems to prevent water stagnation

Evacuation plans for flood-prone settlements


Residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor weather updates closely, avoid low-lying areas, and report early signs of flooding to local authorities.



The federal government has reiterated its commitment to mitigating the impact of natural disasters, but stressed that community participation and local vigilance are vital to reduce casualties and property loss during this period of heightened risk.
