Egbetokun, the most useless IGP in the history of Nigeria Police has ordered the detention of Sowore for criticizing his incompetent and favoritism promotions and other numerous infractions.

Human rights activist and political commentator, Deji Adeyanju, has launched a scathing attack on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, describing him as the “most useless IGP” in Nigeria’s history over the detention of pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement shared on social media, Adeyanju condemned the actions of the police leadership, accusing Egbetokun of weaponizing his office to settle personal scores. He alleged that the IGP ordered the arrest of Sowore simply because the activist criticized the Nigerian Police Force for alleged incompetence, irregular promotions, and bias within the system.

“Egbetokun, the most useless IGP in the history of Nigeria Police has ordered the detention of Sowore for criticizing his incompetent and favoritism promotions and other numerous infractions.

“How do you promote your personal staff arbitrarily just like that?” Adeyanju asked rhetorically. “The Police Act of 2020 and Regulation 367 of the Nigeria Police Regulations clearly prohibit officers from using their position to pursue vendettas or settle personal disputes. But Egbetokun is too shameless to care. He continues to abuse the powers of his office with impunity.”

Adeyanju concluded his remarks by calling on President Bola Tinubu to take swift action against the police chief. “President Tinubu must sack him now. Egbetokun must go!” he declared.

This backlash comes amid reports that Omoyele Sowore was invited for interrogation by the Nigeria Police Force over a petition bordering on alleged forgery and criminal defamation.

According to a police letter dated August 5, 2025, Sowore was summoned to appear before the Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Prior to his visit, Sowore had written to the police requesting to be furnished with details of the petition and the identity of the petitioner. However, the unit responded by insisting that he appear in person, with assurances that the petition would be revealed during the questioning.

IREPORT247NEWS had earlier reported that Sowore showed up at the Force Headquarters with basic personal items, including a travel bag and soap, suggesting he was prepared for detention.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, the activist announced the launch of two protest campaigns: #EgbetokunMustGo and #PoliceProtest, marking what he described as the beginning of a wider resistance against police oppression and abuse of power.
