Ibrahim Ali Namadi, the Commissioner for Transport in Kano State, has tendered his resignation following a damning investigative report that linked him to the controversial release of a suspected drug trafficker from police custody.

Namadi’s resignation comes in the wake of an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the bail granted to a notorious drug suspect, Sulaiman Aminu Danwawu, who was due to be arraigned in court. The Kano State Police Command had accused the former commissioner of facilitating Danwawu’s release without due process.

In response to the allegations, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf swiftly constituted a high-level investigative committee to probe the incident. The panel was chaired by his Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussaini, and tasked with uncovering the facts and providing recommendations.

The commissioner’s decision to step down was announced just hours after Governor Yusuf received the findings of the probe panel. While maintaining his innocence, Namadi said his resignation was a necessary step in the interest of public trust and the integrity of the administration.

“As a member of an administration that has consistently taken a firm stance against the sale and abuse of illicit drugs, I find it imperative to take this step, difficult as it may be,” Namadi said in a public statement.

“Although I deny any wrongdoing, I cannot overlook the importance of public perception. I believe stepping down is vital to protect the values and credibility we have built together.”

He added that his decision was driven by a sense of responsibility and loyalty to the ideals of good governance and transparency.

“I must, as a responsible citizen, do all I can to protect, preserve, and uphold the trust and vision we have worked hard to instil in our state. I remain loyal to the ideals that brought this administration into office,” he added, while expressing gratitude to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve.

In accepting Namadi’s resignation, Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to combating drug abuse, social vices, and any form of misconduct that could erode public confidence in government.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf

Speaking through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, on Wednesday, the governor stated that the matter had been conclusively addressed following Namadi’s resignation.

“We wish to state that the committee set up by the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has concluded its assignment and submitted its report to the governor last night,” Bature announced.

“While the governor is carefully reviewing the committee’s recommendations, the Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Ali Namadi, has resigned his position with immediate effect.”

Bature emphasized that Governor Yusuf views the development as a closed chapter, thanks to the commissioner’s voluntary exit from the government.

“The governor sees the matter as resolved by the commissioner’s decision to withdraw from the administration,” he said, stressing that the government will continue to invest heavily in ensuring public safety and addressing the root causes of crime, particularly among youth.

He further reminded political officeholders of the need to exercise caution when dealing with sensitive issues, urging them to always obtain proper clearance before taking any official action.

The state government, according to Bature, remains resolute in its zero-tolerance stance on drug-related offences and reaffirmed its dedication to preserving the moral and legal standards expected from public officials.
