Peter Obi Defends Single-Term Proposal, Emphasizes Sincere Leadership Over Desperation for Power
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has reiterated his unwavering commitment to serve Nigeria with sincerity and purpose, stating that his intention to govern for a single term of four years, if given the mandate, should not cause public anxiety or doubt.
Expressing surprise at the reactions trailing his one-term proposition, Obi remarked, “I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”
Obi underscored that his political aspiration has never been driven by desperation or personal ambition. Rather, he explained, it is rooted in a deep-seated commitment to national development.
He distanced himself from the behaviors often associated with desperate politicians, stating, “There are clear signs of desperation in politics—such as making hollow promises, resorting to mudslinging, reacting excessively to criticism, or flip-flopping on policies just to remain relevant. None of these traits reflect my principles or my political history.”
According to the former Anambra State governor, leadership should be about service, not entitlement. “If my role in national transformation requires a sacrifice of four years of committed leadership, I am fully ready to give my all. I am not seeking power for its own sake. My goal is to help build a Nigeria that works for everyone, not a privileged few,” he asserted.
Obi also spoke on the importance of integrity in political conduct, pointing to his unblemished track record in past elections. “I have never participated in electoral malpractice—no ballot box snatching, no violence, no intimidation. I challenge anyone to produce evidence of wrongdoing in my political history. You won’t find it,” he said confidently.
He added that even his political opponents have never been subjected to unfair treatment under his watch. “Ask anyone who has contested against me—they were never denied their rights, blackmailed, or coerced. I never demanded they break the bank to match my campaigns or silence their voice. I have always believed in issue-based, fair competition—not manufactured wins.”
Highlighting how impactful a single four-year term could be, Obi proposed a clear reform agenda. “We can confront corruption boldly and transparently. Redirecting the trillions wasted on luxury items—like new presidential jets—toward essential sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure would have an immediate impact.”
He continued, “In the same four-year span, we can enforce the rule of law, strengthen institutions, and ensure justice is not selective. We can conduct truly free, fair, and credible elections, setting a new democratic standard for the nation.”
Obi concluded by emphasizing the essence of leadership: “It is not about how long you stay in power, but what you do with the time you’re given. If entrusted with the responsibility, I will devote every day of my term to the service of our people, proving that transformation doesn’t require endless time—only purposeful leadership.”
