Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence ahead of the Super Eagles B’s eagerly anticipated Group D opener against defending champions Senegal at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Speaking at Monday’s pre-match press conference, Chelle acknowledged the scale of the contest, framing it as a clash between two of Africa’s footballing giants.

“I don’t know if it’s a derby, but I know this is a match between two big countries in African football — Senegal and Nigeria,” Chelle said.

“There is a lot of history between them. They’ve both produced great teams and generations over time, and this will be a great game.”

Senegal, who lifted their first CHAN title in 2022, are looking to begin their title defence on a strong note, while Nigeria return to the competition for the first time since finishing runners-up in 2018.

Chelle, who oversaw an intensive four-week training camp, said his squad is well-prepared for the challenge ahead.

“Our preparation has been very good. We are ready to play this first game and apply everything we have worked on over the past four weeks.”

Tuesday’s encounter at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City will mark the first-ever CHAN meeting between Nigeria and Senegal. The Teranga Lions boast an impressive tournament record, unbeaten in their last 10 CHAN matches in regulation time, and have never lost to a West African team in open play at the competition.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B, known for their attacking verve, have scored 25 goals in 15 CHAN matches. Despite inconsistent group-stage performances in the past, the team has a history of deep runs, including a third-place finish in 2014 and a runner-up spot in 2018.

Today’s clash also marks the first time Nigeria will face a reigning CHAN champion since their heavy 4–0 defeat to Morocco in the 2018 final. A positive result could not only boost Nigeria’s confidence but potentially signal a changing of the guard in West African football.

Meanwhile, Senegal aim to extend their unbeaten run in regulation time at the tournament to 11 matches, continuing the strong defensive form that helped them lift the trophy two years ago.
