Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100,000 Each, National Honours After Historic AfroBasket Win

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with a reward package following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Each player will receive $100,000, while every member of the 11-man coaching and technical crew will get $50,000. In addition, all players coach, and technical crew have been gifted one plot of land each at the Renewed Hope Estate as part of the federal government’s housing initiative.

The President also conferred on the entire team the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Nigerian sports.

The announcement was made by Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima during a special reception held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja on Monday evening.

The victorious squad and their officials arrived at the Presidential Villa at 5:05 p.m., where they were warmly received by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, joined by Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Vice President Shettima lauded the team’s dedication, discipline, and consistency in making the nation proud on the continental stage.

Also present at the event were Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports Development, Senator Garba Maidoki, and Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadou.

D’Tigress recently claimed their fifth consecutive and seventh overall AfroBasket title, defeating Mali 78–64 in the final to reinforce their dominance in African women’s basketball.

The ceremony mirrors a similar honour extended to the Super Falcons last week after their record tenth WAFCON title triumph in Rabat, Morocco.
