Inter Miami’s star forward Lionel Messi suffered an apparent injury and was forced off early in their dramatic Leagues Cup victory over Mexico’s Club Necaxa on Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The 38-year-old Argentine exited the match in the 11th minute after appearing to suffer a groin or upper right leg issue. He was seen receiving treatment before walking off the pitch unaided and heading to the locker room.

“He felt some discomfort,” head coach Javier Mascherano said post-match. “We won’t know the severity until tomorrow. It didn’t seem too painful, but he felt a pull. So, we’ll see.”

Messi initially stumbled after dribbling into the Necaxa defense and collided with Alexis Peña at the top of the box. He then sat on the turf near midfield, laying on his back until medical staff arrived. He was replaced by Federico Redondo.

Despite Messi’s early departure, Inter Miami triumphed 5–4 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in regulation. Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez sealed the win with the decisive kick, following successful penalties from Rodrigo De Paul, Ben Cremaschi, Jordi Alba, Redondo, and Suárez himself.

Telasco Segovia opened the scoring for Miami in the 12th minute, but they went down to 10 men after Maximiliano Falcon was shown a red card in the 17th. Tomas Badaloni equalized for Necaxa in the 33rd minute, and both teams were reduced to 10 players after Cristian Calderón saw red for Necaxa in the 60th.

Substitute Ricardo Monreal gave Necaxa the lead in the 81st minute before Jordi Alba rescued Miami with a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time.

Messi, who has battled thigh issues in the past, particularly during Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March, has been in outstanding form this season—scoring 18 goals and recording 9 assists in 18 MLS matches.

He also assisted both goals in Inter Miami’s 2–1 win over Atlas on Wednesday in their Leagues Cup opener. The Herons wrap up group stage action against Pumas on Wednesday.

Messi led Inter Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup title in 2023 shortly after joining the MLS side. The club and fans will now await updates on his injury status ahead of crucial fixtures.
