Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the country’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their qualification for the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
In a message shared via her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the First Lady praised the team for their unwavering consistency and commitment, hailing their decade-long dominance in African women’s basketball.
“I congratulate the D’Tigress National Basketball Team #DtigressNG for qualifying for the finals of this year’s AfroBasket Tournament,” she wrote.
“Your 10-year unbeaten run is commendable, as it shows your commitment, dedication, hard work, and love for the game.
You are true inspirations and pride to girls and women in general. Thank you for keeping the Nigerian flag flying.
I pray that as you step out for the final match, God will crown your efforts and grant you great success. We all await your arrival—with the trophy again!”
D’Tigress sealed their spot in the final after a thrilling 75–68 win over 11-time champions Senegal in the semi-final played at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Saturday.
In a clash of African basketball heavyweights, Nigeria edged the first quarter 22–17 and held on to a narrow 21–20 lead in the second, despite Senegal’s relentless pressure. The third quarter saw Senegal mount a major comeback, but D’Tigress rallied in the final stretch to reclaim the lead and close out the game with a strong finish.
The defending champions, now aiming for a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title—an unprecedented continental achievement, will today in the final face the former champions Mali who defeated tournament’s debutants South Sudan in the second semi-final game late last night.
