A devastating incident has occurred off the coast of Yemen, where a boat carrying approximately 150 African refugees and migrants capsized due to strong winds on Saturday evening. The tragedy resulted in the deaths of at least 54 people, with dozens more still missing. According to Abdul Qader Bajamil, director of the health office in Zanzibar, rescue teams recovered 54 bodies from the beaches and surrounding areas, while 12 survivors were transferred to Shaqra Hospital.
The boat was traveling from Ethiopia to Yemen, a route known for its dangers. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has described this route as one of the “busiest and most perilous” migration routes worldwide. The organization reported that over 60,000 refugees and migrants arrived in Yemen in 2024, a significant drop from the previous year’s total of 97,200. This decrease is attributed to increased patrols of the waters.

The IOM also highlighted the risks associated with this route, stating that 558 people died along the route last year. Over the past decade, at least 2,082 people have disappeared, including 693 known to have drowned. Yemen currently houses around 380,000 refugees and migrants, making it a critical location for humanitarian efforts.

Bajamil noted that authorities were making arrangements to bury the victims in an area near the city, while search operations continued amid difficult conditions. The incident underscores the need for increased support and protection for refugees and migrants traversing this treacherous route.

As the search for missing individuals continues, the international community remains concerned about the plight of refugees and migrants. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those seeking refuge or a better life, often at the hands of smugglers who overload boats, putting lives at risk.
