Controversy Erupts Over Threat Audio Involving Osun Speaker and Traditional Ruler, as APC and PDP Trade Blame
A leaked audio clip allegedly featuring the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Egbedun, issuing threats and using profane language against the Alasi of Asi, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale, has ignited intense political tension in Osun State, sparking a fierce war of words between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In disturbing audio, which has been widely circulated across social media platforms, Speaker Egbedun was purportedly heard berating the monarch in a highly disrespectful and abusive manner. More alarming was the content of his threats—he allegedly vowed to depose the traditional ruler and called upon Ogun, the Yoruba god of iron, warning that the deity would “swim in the king’s blood” should Oba Oyewale step foot in Asi again.

The incident has since drawn sharp condemnation from the APC. In a strongly worded statement signed by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the opposition party questioned the quality of leadership in the state assembly under Speaker Egbedun.

Olabisi remarked: “If someone like Egbedun is the one steering the affairs of the Osun State House of Assembly, should we be surprised by the apparent ineffectiveness and disorder that characterize the state legislature? His deplorable conduct towards a revered traditional ruler reveals the root of the persistent misgovernance under Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.”
The APC further warned that if the Speaker could display such open disdain and hostility toward a royal father, then the internal situation within the House of Assembly might be far worse than the public is aware of.
“One can only imagine what Assembly members—over whom the Speaker holds constitutional authority—might be enduring in silence. The Speaker’s behavior is nothing short of unbecoming and reflects the rot within the current leadership,” the statement added.

In response, the PDP issued a counter-statement signed by its spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, condemning the APC’s reaction as opportunistic and inflammatory. The PDP confirmed that the threats made by the Speaker, as captured in the audio, had already been formally reported to the Nigeria Police and were currently under active investigation.
“The APC’s statement is not only hypocritical but also a calculated attempt to exploit a sensitive issue for cheap political gain. It is highly irresponsible for them to draw hasty conclusions and incite public sentiment against the Speaker while the matter is still under investigation,” Bamiji stated.
The PDP emphasized the need for caution, noting that politicizing such issues could escalate tensions unnecessarily. The party also accused the opposition of attempting to destabilize the state after suffering widespread electoral defeats.
“We urge the Nigeria Police to broaden their investigation to include opposition elements, especially given the APC’s increasing desperation to sow chaos in Osun State,” Bamiji added.
Expressing confidence in the embattled Speaker’s leadership, the PDP stated: “We believe in the ability of Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun to resolve this issue amicably, particularly with his traditional father. More importantly, we trust that he will remain focused on his legislative duties, continuing to serve the people of Osun State with integrity and purpose.”
