Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son has confirmed he will leave the club this summer, bringing an end to a glittering decade-long spell in North London.
The 33-year-old made the emotional announcement during a press conference ahead of Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in his native South Korea on Sunday — a match that is likely to be his farewell appearance for the club.
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank confirmed that Son will start and captain the team in what promises to be a memorable send-off in front of his home crowd.
Son is expected to join Major League Soccer, with LAFC in advanced talks to sign the South Korean star. Despite fresh interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, Son has opted for a new challenge in the United States.
“I have decided to leave the club this summer. Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision,” Son said, visibly emotional.
“It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. I need a new environment to push myself. Ten years is a long time.
“I came to north London as a kid at 23. I leave as a grown man, a proud man. I want to thank all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope everyone can respect my decision.”
Son could not hide his emotion after announcing his exit
Son revealed he had reached the decision earlier but shared it only with a few teammates and manager Frank, who was informed before Spurs’ first pre-season game against Reading.
Legacy of a Legend
Son departs Spurs as one of the club’s greatest-ever players. He ranks fourth on the club’s all-time goalscorers list with 173 goals and 101 assists in all competitions — including 127 goals and 27 assists in 333 Premier League games.
He played a crucial role in Spurs’ Europa League final triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao last season, coming off the bench before lifting the club’s first major trophy since 2008.

The South Korean also formed a historic attacking partnership with Harry Kane, with the duo combining for 47 goals, the most by any pair in Premier League history.
Thomas Frank: “Son is one of the greatest Premier League wingers”
Speaking in the same press conference, manager Thomas Frank hailed Son as one of the best wingers the league has ever seen.
“For me, personally, I would love to work with him. He’s a fantastic player and person,” Frank said.
“Son is a true Spurs legend. I think he’s one of the greatest wingers in Premier League history. He’s had 10 amazing years here and now leaves on a high, with a well-deserved trophy.”
Frank confirmed Son would lead the team out in what may be his final game in front of a home-country crowd.
“If it is to be his last game, what a beautiful setting — in South Korea, in front of his people. It’s almost the perfect ending to a happy family story.”

Life After Son: Spurs Already Planning for Future
With Son’s departure confirmed, attention now turns to how Tottenham will replace their iconic No. 7. While the club may explore the market for a new winger, Frank indicated confidence in the current squad.
“When a great player leaves, others have a chance to shine. Brennan Johnson can play on the left, and Wilson Odobert impressed against Arsenal. Mathys Tel is also very versatile.
“We have some exciting young players who can grow into that role.”
Son: A Premier League and Spurs Icon
Heung-Min Son will forever be etched in Tottenham folklore. While Harry Kane may hold the scoring records, Son delivered the defining moment of this generation with the club’s long-awaited trophy lift in Bilbao.
Statistically, Son is among the Premier League’s elite:
16th on the all-time scorers list Member of the 100-goal club Second only to Mohamed Salah in goal contributions since his debut More PL goal involvements than Kevin De Bruyne over the same period.
Off the pitch, Son’s humility and charm earned admiration across fanbases — even from rivals. His departure marks the end of an era, not just for Spurs, but for the Premier League.
