Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, will find out their quarter-final opponents today Wednesday July 30th, 2025 as Angola take on Cameroon in a playoff fixture at the ongoing 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The six-time champions made a strong start to their title defence, cruising through Group D with back-to-back wins. Rena Wakama’s side opened their campaign with a dominant 92-45 victory over Rwanda before edging past a resilient Mozambique 60-55 to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

The narrow win over Mozambique extended Nigeria’s remarkable unbeaten run at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket to 26 games — a streak that dates back to the 2015 edition in Cameroon, where the team last lost, ironically, to the hosts in the semi-finals before recovering to claim bronze against Angola.

Cameroon, who finished second in Group B behind Mali, will be looking to bounce back from their 75-49 defeat to the Malians in their last group game. They had earlier opened their campaign with a 70-63 win over debutants South Sudan. However, their -19 points differential (119 scored, 138 conceded) highlights defensive vulnerabilities that could be exploited.

Their opponents, Angola, have struggled throughout the tournament. The two-time African champions lost all their group matches, falling 70-54 to Egypt and 82-74 to hosts Ivory Coast, ending the round-robin phase with a -24 points differential (128 scored, 152 conceded).

The winner of the Angola-Cameroon playoff will face D’Tigress on Thursday, July 31, in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria will enter that matchup as overwhelming favourites to reach the semi-finals — a step that would not only bring them closer to a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title but also secure qualification for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament scheduled for early 2026.
