Former Super Falcons goalkeeper Judith Chime has praised Rasheedat Ajibade as a deserving recipient of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the just-concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, following the forward’s standout performances and inspirational leadership.

Ajibade, 25, clinched three Woman of the Match awards in six appearances as Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, capping it off with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday.

Speaking on a radio interview, Chime—who was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the USA—didn’t hesitate when asked to name the standout player of the tournament.

“Rasheedat Ajibade, that was a good selection. She deserves it. She deserves every victory, every celebration, every salute,” Chime said.

She also shared her pride in the team’s achievement, adding:

“I’m very excited. I’ve always said Mission X isn’t just about the girls who played. It is for every lady, every woman out there. I celebrate the young girls who just made it happen once again. It is not an easy task.”

Ajibade’s Emotional Tribute

Following the Falcons’ triumph, Ajibade took to her X (formerly Twitter) official account to reflect on the team’s journey and express gratitude for the support they received.

“We did it! Mission X accomplished! Words can’t fully express what this moment means,” she wrote.

“This isn’t just our 10th WAFCON trophy; it’s a testament to the relentless spirit of this team. Every tackle, every pass, every moment of pure grit on that field was for each other, for our country, and for every single one of you who believed in us.”

She reserved special praise for the fans:

“To the fans: you are our 12th player. Your cheers from home and abroad echoed in our hearts and pushed us to the very end. Thank you for your unwavering support.”

Ajibade also used her platform to inspire aspiring female footballers:

“To the young girls with dreams in their eyes: this is for you. Hold on to your passion. Work hard. Your time is coming. Believe in yourself, and know that anything is possible.”

She concluded with a heartfelt message of gratitude:

“Forever grateful to the Most High GOD. Forever champions.”

More Accolades for the Falcons

Ajibade wasn’t the only Nigerian player recognized at the tournament. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Best Goalkeeper, conceding just three goals throughout the tournament, including against powerhouses South Africa and Morocco.

In addition, CAF named four Super Falcons players in the WAFCON 2024 Team of the Tournament:

Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie (Brighton & Hove Albion F.C), Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash) and Esther Okoronkwo (Toronto FC).

Their inclusion underlines Nigeria’s dominant showing in Morocco and further cements the Super Falcons’ legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s football team.
