A fatal accident involving a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) shuttle bus has claimed the lives of at least three individuals, including a child, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday near the Eliozu Flyover along the busy Eliozu-Rumuokoro Road. According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the shuttle bus was reportedly speeding when the driver lost control and slammed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside.

Initial reports suggested that as many as five people, most of whom were believed to be students of UNIPORT, may have died in the accident. Several others were said to have sustained critical injuries and were quickly rushed to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) for urgent medical attention.

While confirming the incident, the Rivers State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Inyang Umoh, provided a more conservative account of the fatalities.

He disclosed that FRSC officers who arrived at the scene recovered the lifeless bodies of two women and a child. He also confirmed that the unconscious driver of the shuttle bus was rescued and taken for treatment.

Commander Umoh emphasized that preliminary investigations and accounts from eyewitnesses pointed to overspeeding as the primary cause of the accident.

He stated, “According to what our men observed and what eyewitnesses reported, the vehicle was speeding and rammed into a stationary truck parked by the side of the road. At the scene, two women and a child were confirmed dead, and the driver, who was found unconscious, was rescued by our team.”

The unfortunate incident has thrown the university community and residents of the area into mourning, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better safety measures for student transportation services.
