The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has clarified why the Super Falcons were unable to hold a planned trophy parade in Abuja following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Nigeria’s women’s national team secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title with a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco on Saturday night at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

As part of the celebrations, the NFF had announced that the team would parade the newly designed WAFCON trophy through the streets of Abuja aboard an open-roof bus to allow fans to join in the festivities. However, heavy rainfall in the capital forced the federation to cancel the event.
“The rain didn’t allow for open-roof bus movement,” NFF Director of Communications, Dr. Demola Olajire, said in an interview with reporters in Abuja on Monday, explaining that the inclement weather made the planned procession unsafe and impractical.
Despite the setback, the Super Falcons proceeded directly from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to the Aso Villa, where they were warmly received by President Bola Tinubu.

During the reception, the President announced generous rewards for the players and technical crew, including ₦150 million and a three-bedroom apartment for each player, as well as national honours — with each team member being conferred the title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The victory has been hailed as a defining moment for Nigerian football, with nationwide celebrations expected to continue in the coming days.
