The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a record-breaking $10.4 million total prize pool for the 2024 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN)—a bold financial move aimed at elevating the profile of the competition and rewarding performance across all stages.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, the eventual champions will earn $3.5 million, representing a significant 75% increase from the $2 million awarded to the winners of the previous edition.

The runner-up will receive $1.2 million, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will take home $700,000 and $600,000, respectively. Quarter-finalists who do not progress further will each earn $450,000.

To ensure inclusivity, CAF has extended financial rewards to all 19 participating teams. Depending on their final group standings, teams finishing third or fourth will receive $300,000 or $200,000, respectively. Bottom-placed teams in five-team groups will also receive $200,000.

A Strategic Investment in African Football

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe described the increased prize pool as a strategic investment in African football development. He emphasized CHAN’s unique role in promoting locally based talent, as it features players drawn exclusively from their domestic leagues.

“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” said Motsepe.

“CHAN remains a key part of our strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global broadcasters.”

A Landmark Edition

The 2024 CHAN tournament, officially branded as the CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, marks the first time the competition will be jointly hosted by three countries. It will take place from August 2 to 30, 2025, due to calendar adjustments.

Nineteen teams will battle for continental glory, including defending champions Senegal, record winners Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.

Nigeria’s Return and Rising Expectations

For Nigeria, this tournament marks a return to CHAN after missing the last edition. The Super Eagles B secured qualification with a 3–1 aggregate victory over arch-rivals Ghana, and will be looking to go one step further than their best-ever finish as runners-up in 2018.

Led by Coach Eric Chelle, the squad will be aiming to claim Nigeria’s first CHAN title, hoping to transform the strength of its domestic talent pool into continental success.

With a substantial financial incentive, heightened global attention, and improved infrastructure, the 2024 CHAN promises to be a landmark event in African football.
