The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is gearing up for an exciting new chapter as the 2025/26 season officially gets underway next month.
Current champions Remo Stars will begin their title defense with a high-stakes clash against Rivers United, in a fixture confirmed during the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Abuja on Monday.
Next season, the NPFL will once again feature 20 top-flight clubs from across the country, with each team scheduled to play 38 matches—half at home and half away—across 38 match weeks. The structure aims to ensure balance, fairness, and fierce competition throughout the campaign.

Improved Fixture Scheduling for Better Crowd Control
In a bid to improve matchday safety, crowd management, and overall logistics, the NPFL has introduced a significant change to the fixture schedule. Clubs from the same state will no longer play home matches on the same weekend, a move designed to reduce strain on local security services and enhance fan experience.
For instance, Abia Warriors and Enyimba FC—both based in Abia State—will have their home fixtures scheduled on different days. The same applies to Kano Pillars and Barau FC in Kano State.

This adjustment is expected to ease traffic congestion around stadiums, improve matchday logistics, and foster better fan turnout, while also showcasing the NPFL’s growing commitment to improved planning and professional league management—long-standing demands from clubs and supporters alike.
High Expectations and Fierce Competition Ahead
As the new season approaches, anticipation is mounting among football fans across Nigeria. All eyes will be on Remo Stars as they look to defend their title, but fierce competition is expected from the likes of Rivers United, Enyimba, and Plateau United—all seasoned contenders with ambitions of their own.

With improved fixture planning, rising club professionalism, and heightened fan engagement, the 2025/26 NPFL season promises to deliver thrilling football, intense rivalries, and standout individual performances.
Many are hopeful this will be one of the most competitive and well-organized seasons in recent NPFL history.
