The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast spanning from Monday, July 28 through Wednesday, cautioning residents in various parts of the country to prepare for thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and potential flash flooding.
According to the weather outlook released in Abuja, NiMet highlighted that different regions of the country would experience varying degrees of rain, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies during the forecast period.
The agency specifically warned that some states—particularly in the northern and central parts of the country—are at heightened risk of flash flooding and advised both residents and emergency management authorities to take proactive measures.
Northern Region Forecast
Monday (July 28):
In the northern states, the morning hours are expected to be dominated by thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall across Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina. Other northern areas may witness sunny intervals with patches of cloud cover.
By afternoon and evening, these conditions are expected to intensify. Thunderstorms and moderate rains are forecast over Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, Katsina, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. NiMet strongly warned of the likelihood of flash flooding in several of these states, particularly Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano.

As the day unfolds, these areas—along with Kogi—are likely to witness continued rainfall. NiMet raised a particular alert for Plateau State due to the high risk of flash floods.

Given the projected weather conditions, NiMet urged residents—especially those in flood-prone areas—to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The agency emphasized:
Avoid driving during heavy downpours, as visibility may be poor and roads could become slippery or flooded.
Dress warmly, especially in the northern regions, where nighttime temperatures may drop significantly.
Secure loose items that may be displaced by strong winds accompanying thunderstorms.
Unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms to prevent electrical surges.
Refrain from taking shelter under trees, as they can attract lightning strikes.
NiMet further advised communities at high risk of flooding to activate local emergency preparedness systems and ensure quick responses to weather-induced hazards.
Airline operators and pilots are strongly encouraged to obtain detailed, location-specific weather reports from NiMet offices at airports to enhance safe flight operations.
