As preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has revealed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the verge of welcoming more high-profile political figures, including a current serving governor, into its fold.

Governor Sule made this disclosure during a live interview on Channels Television on Sunday, July 27. According to him, the APC is actively developing and executing strategic plans to counter the recent alliance formed by opposition parties and to consolidate its own political dominance ahead of the polls.

“Yes, we have had discussions, although it’s not something I can fully disclose here. Just as the opposition is planning, we are also planning. This is politics—we’re not just sitting by and watching. As they strategize, we strategize too, and at the end of the day, whoever has the better strategy will prevail,” Sule explained.

The governor pointed out that defections into the APC are steadily increasing, especially from the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He claimed that more senators and governors are set to decamp in the coming weeks, adding that such moves are deliberate and part of a larger political plan—not coincidences.

“You hear of senators defecting to the APC almost every day. These are not spontaneous actions; they are part of a carefully orchestrated political strategy. And very soon, another serving governor will join the APC,” he added.

When asked to respond to recent claims made by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which alleged that some politicians were reluctant to align with the opposition due to fears of persecution under the APC-led federal government, Governor Sule dismissed the accusations as unfounded and politically motivated.

“I don’t take anyone for granted, but the truth is they have to find something to say. The era of former President Goodluck Jonathan was completely different from what we have now. We did not face the same set of challenges then as we are facing today,” he noted.

Governor Sule also drew a distinction between the coalition that birthed the APC in 2013 and the current opposition alliance. He maintained that the foundation and credibility of the APC coalition far outweigh that of the newly formed opposition bloc.

“The calibre of political actors and parties that came together to form the APC—like the ANPP, APGA, ACN, CPC, and even parts of the new PDP—was a formidable combination. What we are seeing now in the opposition is not comparable to that coalition in terms of strength, structure or influence,” he stated.

Governor Sule’s remarks come amid growing political realignments and the formation of new coalitions ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties jostle for dominance in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race for control at both the federal and state levels.
