President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to host Nigeria’s victorious Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, July 28, 2025, following their dramatic and historic win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Nigerian women’s national football team pulled off a stunning comeback on Saturday night in Rabat, Morocco, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat the host nation 3–2 in a thrilling final. The win secured Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, further cementing the country’s dominance in African women’s football.
Moments after the final whistle, President Tinubu placed a congratulatory call to the team’s dressing room, commending the players for their determination, character, and fighting spirit. The President pledged to welcome the team in person upon their return to the country.
“Your spectacular comeback is a reflection of the indomitable Nigerian spirit,” President Tinubu reportedly told the players.
Speaking with Ireport247news, a senior Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed that logistics are being finalised to ensure the team’s timely return for the state reception.
“We’re still coordinating the logistics of the team’s return, but as of the last update, President Tinubu is expected to host the Super Falcons at Aso Rock on Monday,” the official said.
In addition to lifting the trophy, the Super Falcons also dominated individual awards at the tournament:
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Most Valuable Player, Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie received the Best Goalkeeper award, while the team’s Head Coach, Justine Madugu was honoured as Coach of the Tournament.
Their success also comes with financial rewards, as the NFF is set to receive N1.5 billion in prize money from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Super Falcons’ victory has sparked nationwide celebrations and widespread praise from sports stakeholders, government officials, and fans. With their 10th continental crown, Nigeria reaffirms its status as the most successful team in WAFCON history.
The state reception on Monday is expected to include top government officials, sports dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic corps, as the nation honours its football heroines.
