President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Falcons following their extraordinary victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they clinched a record-extending 10th continental title, further solidifying Nigeria’s supremacy in African women’s football.

The Nigerian women’s national team staged a breathtaking comeback on Saturday night at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, Morocco, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the host nation 3-2 in front of a raucous and expectant home crowd.

It was a final that lived up to its billing — intense, dramatic, and emotionally charged — as the Super Falcons displayed their trademark grit, composure, and championship mentality.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu hailed the team’s resilience, calling their performance a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Nigerian people.

“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” President Tinubu stated.

“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”

The President’s remarks reflect the pride of a nation that has long viewed the Super Falcons not just as athletes but as national symbols of excellence and perseverance.

Saturday’s victory was more than just a football match — it was a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s legacy as a powerhouse in women’s football on the continent.

This latest triumph, dubbed “Mission X”, marked the culmination of months of preparation, intense competition, and national expectation. It brought Nigeria’s WAFCON title haul to ten, putting them well ahead of their closest rivals and highlighting their sustained dominance over the decades.

Led by head coach Justine Madugu who was named the coach of the tournament, the Falcons navigated a challenging tournament that saw them overcome not only fierce opponents but also external pressure and the weight of history.

In Rabat, they silenced a passionate Moroccan crowd and a highly motivated host team aiming for their first-ever title on home soil.

Beyond the sporting achievement, the Falcons’ victory is being celebrated as a moment of national unity and pride, especially at a time when Nigerians are in search of uplifting moments and symbols of national success.

The win also reinforces the importance of investing in women’s sports, as the Super Falcons continue to serve as an inspiration to millions of young girls across the country and the African continent.

As preparations begin for their return home, plans are already underway for a rousing state reception. The victory parade is expected to include honours and recognitions for the team, whose resilience and skill once again put Nigeria in the global spotlight.

The Super Falcons have not just lifted a trophy — they have lifted the hopes of a nation, reminded the world of Nigeria’s footballing heritage, and proven once again that they remain the team to beat in African women’s football.
