Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, en route to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will represent Nigeria at the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4), taking place from July 27 to 29, 2025.
The high-level event, jointly organized by the United Nations in partnership with the governments of Ethiopia and Italy, will bring together world leaders, policymakers, and experts to review global progress made since the inaugural summit in 2021.
The goal is to advance sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems capable of tackling hunger, malnutrition, and climate-related challenges.
During the summit, Vice President Shettima will engage in key conversations centered on transforming critical agricultural value chains—particularly within the coffee sector—as well as expanding Nigeria’s food security strategy and innovations in agricultural technology.
He will be joined by other heads of state, development partners, and senior officials in a collective effort to reshape the global food landscape.
According to a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Senator Shettima will also participate in a series of ministerial roundtables and side events.
These include sessions on public financing, responsible investment, and trade policies aimed at accelerating agricultural transitions and inclusive rural development.
The summit will also feature field visits, peer-learning engagements, and knowledge-exchange platforms designed to foster international collaboration and identify evidence-based solutions for food system transformation.
Ahead of the summit, Nigeria’s Task Force on the UN Food Systems Summit held a strategic briefing where Vice President Shettima outlined three key objectives for the Nigerian delegation: to position Nigeria as a continental leader in food systems reform, to harmonize international support with national priorities, and to promote a private sector-driven model of agricultural transformation across Africa.
The outcome of the summit is expected to strengthen global commitments toward building robust food systems that are capable of absorbing climate shocks, ensuring access to nutrition, and eradicating hunger.
Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of the summit’s activities.
