Inter Miami missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati after being held to a goalless draw in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday night.

With star forward Lionel Messi and fellow veteran Jordi Alba both suspended for the fixture — following their controversial absence from the midweek MLS All-Star Game in Texas — the Herons lacked their usual spark in attack and were frustrated by a disciplined and resilient Cincinnati side at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The absence of the Argentine icon was keenly felt throughout the match, with Miami struggling to break down a well-organised Cincinnati defence.

The visitors, meanwhile, came closest to snatching a late winner deep into stoppage time, only to see Miles Robinson’s header disallowed for an apparent foul on Noah Allen — a decision that was met with protests from the Cincinnati bench.

The result leaves Inter Miami seven points behind Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference standings, with the Florida outfit missing a chance to apply real pressure in the title race.

Despite the on-pitch disappointment, there was still excitement in the air as Rodrigo De Paul, Messi’s World Cup-winning team-mate with Argentina, was formally unveiled to the home crowd ahead of kickoff.

The 31-year-old midfielder joins from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and is expected to bolster Miami’s midfield options during their upcoming Leagues Cup campaign.

“What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, to win titles, and to write pages in the club’s history,” said De Paul, who addressed fans after his signing was officially announced on Friday night.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham welcomed the high-profile addition, praising De Paul’s winning mentality and leadership qualities.

“It’s a club that is shaping up to be great, to have a long history, so that many people follow this incredible team.”

“Rodrigo is a player I’ve admired for many years,” Beckham said.

“As a leader, he has brought so much to the teams he has played for — especially with his national team Argentina.

I’m excited to welcome another World Cup-winning player not just to Inter Miami, but also to MLS.”

With Messi expected to return soon and De Paul poised to make his debut, Miami will be hoping for a strong push in the coming weeks as the race for playoff positioning intensifies.
