Tragedy struck on Friday night in Amichi, a bustling town in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, as several people were feared dead following a horrific road accident involving a trailer.
The incident occurred at the Chisco Park Junction, a well-known area for commercial activity and commuter traffic.
According to eyewitness reports, the fatal crash happened at approximately 9:30 p.m. when a trailer reportedly suffered a sudden brake failure.
The out-of-control vehicle veered off course and ploughed into unsuspecting pedestrians and traders who were either engaged in night-time commercial activities or waiting to board vehicles at the park.
Footage of the tragic incident was captured by the Amichi city-wide CCTV surveillance system. The disturbing video showed bodies sprawled across the ground, while shocked residents and passersby scrambled to offer first aid and rescue assistance. The chaotic scene was filled with wails, confusion, and frantic efforts to save lives before the arrival of emergency responders.
Eyewitnesses who were present at the scene narrated the traumatic moments to our correspondent. One of them, a man identified simply as Uche, recounted how the accident happened in an instant.
“It was all so sudden,” he said. “People were going about their usual night business. Some passengers were standing by, waiting for vehicles when the trailer lost control and ran straight into the crowd.”
He further described the aftermath as devastating, saying that among the victims were commercial motorcyclists, petty traders, bystanders, and even a little girl. “The trailer hit so many people at once. Some of us saw it coming and managed to escape, but many others didn’t have time to react. It was just too fast.”
Uche added that the victims mostly consisted of individuals operating roadside businesses or passengers waiting at the loading bay near the park. “Their bodies were lying helplessly on the ground until some residents and motorists began rescue efforts. Security operatives later arrived to help manage the scene.”
When contacted for official confirmation, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, acknowledged the incident but noted that a full report on the number of casualties was still being compiled.
“Yes, we received information about the accident,” she said. “However, the exact casualty figures and other details are still under investigation. We will release a comprehensive statement once we have more accurate information.”
As of the time of this report, authorities were yet to disclose the final death toll, while community members continued to mourn the tragic loss of lives and call for improved road safety measures in the area.
