Liverpool have announced plans to create a permanent tribute in memory of former Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash earlier this month.

The Premier League champions confirmed today Saturday 26th July that a commemorative sculpture will be installed at Anfield, serving as a lasting remembrance of the beloved Portuguese star and his sibling.

Jota, a father of three, died alongside his brother on July 3, just 11 days after marrying his long-time partner Rute Cardoso, when their car veered off the road and caught fire in northern Spain.

Since the accident, Anfield has become a site of mourning, with thousands of fans leaving flowers, scarves, cards, and jerseys outside the stadium in tribute to the 27-year-old former winger.

In a club statement, Liverpool said the tributes would be preserved and repurposed to form part of the planned memorial.

“The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored,” the statement read.

“Floral tributes will be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites. The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield.”

‘Forever 20’ Emblem to Feature Throughout Season

As part of the club’s tribute, Liverpool also confirmed that players will wear a “Forever 20” emblem—a reference to Jota’s now-retired shirt number—on matchday shirts and stadium jackets throughout the upcoming season.

The team honoured Jota and Silva during a recent friendly at Preston North End, and a more formal commemoration will take place ahead of their Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth on August 15. The event will include a fan mosaic and a minute of silence.

Diogo Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, quickly became a fan favourite with his sharp instincts, tireless work rate, and key goals in both domestic and European campaigns.

The memorial at Anfield will ensure that Jota and his brother’s legacy lives on, not only in the memories of supporters but also in the very fabric of the club.
