As preparations intensify for the upcoming Kaura Namoda South State House of Assembly bye-election in Zamfara State, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Alhaji Iliyasu Maijega, has called on all political parties to conduct themselves in accordance with electoral laws and uphold democratic principles during the poll.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Gusau, Maijega emphasized the importance of political discipline and integrity, urging parties to refrain from electoral malpractices, particularly vote buying and the illegal acquisition of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“I appeal to all political stakeholders to avoid vote buying and the purchasing of PVCs in any form. We must allow the electorate to exercise their constitutional right and choose their leaders freely,” Maijega stated.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 16 for the bye-election to fill the vacant Kaura Namoda South State Assembly seat, which became open following the death of the sitting lawmaker, Alhaji Aminu Kasuwar-Daji, in April this year.
Highlighting the commitment of the Zamfara State government to credible electoral processes, Maijega reaffirmed that Governor Dauda Lawal remains firmly opposed to all forms of electoral misconduct.
“Governor Dauda Lawal has consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards vote buying and any act that undermines electoral fairness,” he reiterated.
Maijega further appealed to all participating political parties to demonstrate maturity and collaborate with the electoral umpire to ensure the smooth conduct of the forthcoming exercise.
“INEC cannot do it alone. As political actors, we must support the commission’s efforts to deliver a free, fair, and peaceful election. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that democracy thrives,” he said.
In addition, the governor’s aide called on INEC to work closely with security agencies to guarantee adequate security before, during, and after the election. He stressed the need for a peaceful atmosphere where voters can make their choices without fear or intimidation.
Reflecting on the readiness of the ruling party, Maijega expressed optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would emerge victorious in the bye-election. According to him, the party’s performance in governance has built trust among the electorate.
“We are confident of winning because we believe in the positive impact our administration has made. In just two years, the government under Governor Lawal has delivered tangible results in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment. These achievements are visible, and they will influence voters’ decisions in favour of the PDP,” he concluded.
