The President of the federal republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for the Super Falcons, ahead of their highly anticipated final clash against hosts Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, made the announcement during a press briefing Abuja on Thursday, stating that all entitlements—covering the entire tournament up to the July 26 final—have already been disbursed for immediate payment to the players, coaches, and officials of the team.

Dikko described the move as a “policy in motion”, reflecting the Tinubu administration’s renewed commitment to the welfare of Nigerian athletes.

“This is now the standard going forward—timely payments without drama or delays,” Dikko affirmed.

He further revealed that the president’s directive also extends to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who are preparing to compete at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire. The team, he said, will benefit from improved allowances and bonuses under the same policy.

“This is the kind of sports administration we are building—one rooted in dignity, trust, and shared prosperity. Future generations will appreciate President Tinubu’s reforms in the sports sector,” Dikko added.

Boost Ahead of a Historic Final

The financial approval comes as a major morale booster for the Super Falcons, who are set to battle Morocco in front of a lively home crowd at the Stade Moulay Abdellah in Rabat in Saturday 26th July 2025. Nigeria will be aiming to win a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, while Morocco hope to claim their first-ever continental crown.

Coach Justine Madugu has already praised the federal government for the show of support, saying it sends a strong message of appreciation and seriousness about women’s football in Nigeria.

The Super Falcons remain Africa’s most successful women’s national team, having won nine WAFCON titles and consistently represented the continent at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Despite their success, financial disputes and logistical issues have long been a blemish on their achievements.

President Tinubu’s decision marks one of the strongest official gestures yet toward changing that narrative and reflects a growing institutional commitment to ensuring athletes are treated with respect and professionalism.
