Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed a return to French Ligue 1 side FC Nantes after sealing a move from Major League Soccer (MLS) club Colorado Rapids.

The 28-year-old Nigeria international, who previously enjoyed a loan spell at Nantes during the 2017–2018 season, has signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the Stade de la Beaujoire until June 2028.

Awaziem made 20 appearances for Colorado Rapids this season, all as a starter, and registered one assist in a 3–2 win over San Diego FC on April 12. His time in MLS also included a brief stint with FC Cincinnati, where he notched two assists in seven starts last season.

Reflecting on his return to Ligue 1, Awaziem expressed excitement and a deep personal connection with the club.

“When the opportunity came, I did not hesitate for a second to come back, because for me, Nantes is like home,” he said.

“The people are wonderful, the club is great, and I was really looking forward to being in this environment again.”

The Super Eagles star also outlined his ambitions for the new chapter.

“From a sporting perspective, I want to do everything I can to help the club achieve its goals—win trophies, compete at the highest level against the best teams, and bring FC Nantes back to the top,” he added.

Colorado Rapids president Padraig Smith thanked the Nigerian defender for his professionalism and dedication during his time at the club.

“We’re grateful to Chido for his time with the club this season,” Smith said. “We wish him nothing but success in this next chapter.”

Nantes praised Awaziem’s growth since his first spell in France, describing him as a “more mature and well-rounded player.”

“Though he was still young at the time, he learned a lot alongside established players like Diego Carlos, Andrei Girotto, and Nicolas Pallois,” the club noted.

Awaziem began his football journey with El Kanemi Warriors in Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) before joining FC Porto’s youth academy in 2014. He made his professional debut with Porto in January 2016 and has since featured in leagues across Turkey, Spain, Croatia, Portugal, and the United States.

Internationally, Awaziem has earned 34 caps for Nigeria since making his debut against South Africa in 2017. He has represented the Super Eagles at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
