A former presidential candidate and one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has announced that the party is poised for a strong national comeback ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Olawepo-Hashim made this declaration during a high-level strategic engagement with the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in Abuja. Speaking to party leaders, he confidently declared: “The PDP will rise again.”

The former presidential aspirant stated that despite past internal challenges, defections, and political instability, the PDP remains the only party with a true national outlook and widespread grassroots support that can rescue Nigeria from its current state of decline. He stressed that the PDP’s enduring legacy lies in its inclusive national structure and reach.

“From inception in 1998, the PDP was designed to be a national platform. It has maintained a significant presence in virtually every polling unit across the country,” he explained. “That legacy is still alive, and it is this widespread base that gives PDP the edge as the only credible alternative to the APC.”

Addressing concerns about the party’s recent setbacks and perceived waning influence, Dr. Hashim reassured stakeholders that the core strength of the PDP remains intact. He argued that defections by certain individuals—often under pressure or political blackmail—do not equate to the collapse of the party.

“Do not be discouraged by those who have left. The true strength of any political party lies not in a handful of powerful individuals but in the commitment of its members and supporters. The people are still with the PDP,” he said.

Dr. Hashim also commended the Acting National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Umaru Damagun, for his resilient and stabilizing leadership during what he described as a turbulent period in the party’s history.

“The calmness and wisdom with which Ambassador Damagun has steered the affairs of this party is worthy of praise. While some forces tried to destabilize the PDP, he held the party together with uncommon courage and clarity.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Dr. Hashim urged the party to present a credible and visionary presidential candidate—someone who embodies integrity and is committed to tackling the nation’s most pressing issues, including insecurity, economic stagnation, and social injustice.

“Nigerians are yearning for a new kind of leadership—one that is bold, ethical, and focused on real development. The PDP must rise to the occasion and present a candidate who symbolizes hope, unity, and national renewal. With discipline, unity, and courage, the PDP can rebuild not just its political fortunes, but Nigeria itself.”
