The Bayelsa State Government has inaugurated a six-member committee tasked with investigating the prolonged intra-communal crisis in Otakeme community, located in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state. The move is aimed at restoring lasting peace and social harmony to the troubled area.

The committee was constituted by the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, during a stakeholders’ meeting with representatives of Otakeme community held on Tuesday at the Government House in Yenagoa.

According to a statement released by Mr. Doubara Atasi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor, the committee has been mandated to carry out a comprehensive inquiry into the leadership tussle within the community.

The panel is expected to examine the root causes of the dispute, especially the allegations against the current Chairman of the Otakeme Council of Chiefs, and submit its findings to the state government within three weeks for appropriate action.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo emphasized the need for the committee to adopt a neutral and objective approach, ensuring fair hearing for all individuals and groups involved in the conflict. He stressed that the government is committed to a just resolution that would reflect the will and interest of the entire community.

During the meeting, the Deputy Governor urged all parties to embrace dialogue and reconciliation, noting that the leadership conflict, which has persisted for over 52 years, has significantly undermined the unity and development of Otakeme.

He described the situation as unfortunate and avoidable, stressing that no community should remain divided for such an extended period.

In light of the escalating tension, Senator Ewhrudjakpo revealed that the state government had earlier taken proactive steps by suspending the community’s annual festival.

He explained that intelligence reports indicated a high risk of unrest, as rival factions had both planned to hold separate versions of the event while simultaneously claiming leadership rights.

“Government actually had credible evidence that there was likely going to be a breach of the peace because two parties were laying claim to the community leadership and wanted to organise the community’s festival,” he stated.

Reaffirming the administration’s dedication to fostering peace and stability across all communities in Bayelsa, the Deputy Governor called on residents of Otakeme to put aside personal interests and work collectively towards building a united and progressive community.
