The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested several members of the criminal gang responsible for the recent abduction of Justice E.G. Umokoro of the Bayelsa State High Court. However, a manhunt remains ongoing for the gang leader, who is still at large.

The incident, which caused significant concern within the legal and security communities, occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. IREPORT247NEWS earlier reported the abduction, which was captured in a chilling video that later went viral online.

The footage showed Justice E.G. Umukoro struggling against his assailants as they forcefully attempted to shove him into a waiting getaway vehicle. Despite his fierce resistance, the attackers eventually overpowered him and drove away, abandoning his black SUV at the scene.

Following days of intensive investigations and coordinated intelligence efforts, the Bayelsa State Police Command, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), secured the release of the judge. His release was officially confirmed on Wednesday, July 3.

The arrest of the suspects involved in the abduction was announced by Governor Douye Diri during a State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa. Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigation and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to law and order.

“All those who committed the crime have been apprehended, except one who is still on the run,” the governor stated. “Bayelsa State has zero tolerance for crime and criminality. We will not allow criminals to disrupt the peace and safety of our citizens.”

In a related development during the same council meeting, Governor Diri recognized the exceptional integrity and professionalism of Superintendent of Police (SP) Sentome Obi, who recently rejected a $17,000 bribe offered by a suspect involved in an ongoing organ harvesting investigation.

Describing SP Obi as a beacon of hope within the Nigerian Police Force, Governor Diri lauded his moral courage and uprightness at a time when the image of the police is under scrutiny nationwide.

“At a time when the Nigerian Police is grappling with image challenges, Bayelsa has produced an officer with honour and integrity,” Diri said. “SP Obi has not only made Bayelsa proud, but has also restored public trust in the Force.”

As a reward for his gallantry and unwavering commitment to justice, the governor announced a series of incentives for SP Obi, including a fully furnished three-bedroom apartment, a car, and a recommendation for promotion.

Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, also congratulated SP Obi, commending his principled stance in the face of temptation. He called on the state government to continue prioritizing investment in security infrastructure and personnel welfare to safeguard lives and property across the state.

Governor Diri concluded by reiterating his administration’s resolve to strengthen security using advanced technology, including the deployment of surveillance drones and the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems across strategic locations in Yenagoa.
