The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, after their dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the performance as a “superlative victory” and a reflection of Nigeria’s enduring spirit.

The high-stakes match, held in Casablanca, Morocco, saw the Super Falcons outlast the reigning champions in one of the most intense fixtures of the tournament.

Nigeria took the lead through Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty late in the first half before South Africa equalised from the spot in the second. However, it was Michelle Alozie’s stoppage-time strike that sealed a sensational win and sent the Falcons into the WAFCON final.

Reacting to the victory, President Tinubu took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to shower praise on the team for what he termed a “magnificent display of grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”

“Well deserved! Congratulations to our Super Falcons!

Your incredible #WAFCON2025 semi-finals victory over South Africa today was nothing short of superlative.

It was a magnificent display of grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. You have made the nation proud.

Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Go for our 10th title.

Nigerians worldwide are rooting for you. We are waiting to receive the cup,” the President posted.

The win has not only reaffirmed Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but also reignited the hopes of millions of fans back home who are yearning to see the Super Falcons reclaim their crown and lift their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

From Abuja to Lagos, Kano to Port Harcourt, and among the Nigerian diaspora globally, scenes of celebration broke out following the final whistle, with fans praising the team’s resilience, maturity, and fighting spirit.

Social media platforms were flooded with congratulatory messages, as hashtags like #SuperFalcons, #MissionX, #WAFCON2024, and #NaijaToTheFinal trended nationally.

Beyond the field, the Falcons’ journey has become a unifying force in a time of national and economic challenges. Their performance has inspired conversations around women’s sports development, national unity, and the need for sustained investment in grassroots football.

With one final hurdle remaining, the Super Falcons will now prepare to face either Morocco or Ghana in the final in Saturday, as they aim to add another glorious chapter to their storied history.

As the countdown to the final begins, Nigerians everywhere are hoping the team can deliver one last heroic performance and bring the trophy home.
