Vietnam is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Wipha, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and flooding to the northern coast of the country. The typhoon is forecast to make landfall in Hung Yen and Ninh Binh provinces, located south of the capital, Hanoi, with wind speeds of up to 102 kph (63 mph). The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism has warned of potential disruptions to travel plans, and the country’s weather agency expects up to 500mm (20 inches) of rainfall, which could cause dangerous flooding and landslides.

The typhoon has already caused significant damage and disruption in the Philippines, where five people have been reported killed and several are missing. The country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that at least 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, with many more taking shelter in schools, village halls, and covered courtyards. The Marikina River burst its banks, causing widespread flooding in the metropolitan area.

According to John Paul Nietes, an emergency operations centre assistant supervisor, an elderly woman and her driver were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a bridge in Caloocan. “Their car was recovered last night. The rescue operation is continuing, but as of today, they haven’t found either of them,” he said. The Philippines is prone to natural disasters, with at least 20 storms or typhoons striking or coming near the country each year. The impact of these storms has become more deadly and destructive due to climate change.

The Vietnamese government has taken steps to prepare for the typhoon, with an estimated 350,000 soldiers on standby to respond to any emergencies. The country’s weather agency has warned of potential flooding and landslides, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions. In the Philippines, the government has also taken steps to respond to the disaster, with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council coordinating relief efforts.

The typhoon’s impact is a reminder of the devastating effects of natural disasters, particularly in countries vulnerable to climate change. As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential for residents and visitors to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
