Gunmen suspected to be members of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) have launched coordinated attacks on security outposts in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing a senior officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and leaving another missing.

The fatal incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, July 19, 2025, when the heavily armed terrorists stormed the Luma Immigration Service Patrol Outpost, situated along the Babanna-Wawa road.

The attackers, numbering in scores, overpowered the operatives on duty, killing a Superintendent of Immigration simply identified as Suleiman. Disturbingly, the assailants set Suleiman’s body ablaze, alongside their carbine weapon.

In addition to the assault on the immigration post, the terrorists simultaneously targeted a nearby border patrol checkpoint manned by mobile police officers at Luma Ba’are, within the same Borgu axis.

While multiple vehicles, including patrol vans, motorcycles, and private cars belonging to the officers, were reportedly set on fire, there was no immediate confirmation of police casualties from that location.

Local residents who spoke to Daily Trust recounted that the twin attacks on Luma-Sanke and Luma-Ba’are occurred within a short time frame, suggesting a well-coordinated operation by the militants. The community remains on edge as fear of further incursions mounts.

Following the incident, another immigration officer, identified as Ahmed, was declared missing. His whereabouts remain unknown days after the attacks, raising concerns about his fate.

An insider within the Nigeria Immigration Service, who confirmed the attacks to Daily Trust, described the situation as dire. “The terrorists attacked the Luma Immigration Service Patrol Outpost on Babanna-Wawa road, killed Officer Suleiman, and burnt his body. Ahmed, another officer, is still missing and there is no information on him yet,” the source disclosed.

Another official lamented the deteriorating security situation in the region, stating, “The attacks were carried out at both the NIS Outpost in Luma-Sanke and the Mopol Checkpoint in Luma-Ba’are, Borgu, Niger State. This is becoming unbearable. Terrorists are having a field day in the area.”

As of now, security agencies have not issued an official statement regarding the attacks or any measures taken in response. The escalating insecurity in Niger State, particularly in the border communities, continues to raise alarm over the boldness of terrorist groups operating within the region.
