The Labour Party, under the leadership of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, has firmly declared that it will not enter into any political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This position was officially announced during a media briefing held in Abuja on Monday, following the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The NEC meeting was attended by members of the National Working Committee, other national officers, and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the party’s Vice Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. The resolutions from the meeting were jointly signed by the National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the National Secretary, Alhaji Farouk Ibrahim.

Addressing the press, Abure reiterated that the Labour Party remains ideologically distinct and is guided by programmes and a philosophy that directly tackle Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic challenges. He categorically stated that the party cannot form alliances with political groups or individuals he described as “spent forces” who had previously mismanaged the country’s resources and opportunities.

“NEC in session has made it clear that the Labour Party will not be a part of any political coalition for the 2027 general elections,” Abure declared.

“We believe that the 2023 coalition effort was more impactful than any other in recent history. Our focus now is to rebuild, reconcile differences within the party, and consolidate on the gains made during that election cycle.”

Furthermore, Abure condemned the activities of a faction within the party that purportedly held a parallel meeting on Friday, July 18, at the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja. He noted that the gathering was illegal, as it contravened the provisions of the Labour Party’s Constitution and lacked official sanction.

“The NEC disassociates itself completely from the outcomes of that illegal assembly, including the decision to rename the unconstitutional Umuahia Caretaker Committee as an Interim National Working Committee. Such illegality cannot be sanitized by mere rebranding; the so-called Interim NWC remains unlawful,” he stated.

Clarifying the constitutional provisions, Abure explained that only the National Secretary, with the express approval of the National Chairman, is authorized under Article 14(4)(B) of the party’s constitution to convene official meetings. He emphasized that there is no leadership vacuum within the Labour Party.

Abure reminded the public that the Labour Party held its National Convention on March 27 in Nnewi, strictly in accordance with all legal requirements and the party’s constitution. He added that the Supreme Court had validated the legitimacy of this convention in a ruling delivered on April 4, 2025.

In view of these legal endorsements, Abure called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling and uphold the legally recognized leadership of the Labour Party.

“Consequently, the NEC urges the general public to disregard the so-called factional meeting and any resolutions that emanated from it. NEC reaffirms its confidence in the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee and calls on all members to remain loyal to the established party leadership,” he asserted.

Additionally, the NEC granted approval for the party to conduct congresses at state, local government, and ward levels, in alignment with the Labour Party’s constitution and all relevant electoral laws.

Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed

Abure concluded by commending Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed for his unwavering support for the party’s leadership and for publicly declaring his intention to contest in the 2027 elections, a move that further consolidates party unity and direction.
