The sudden resignation of India‘s Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has sent shockwaves through the country’s political landscape. Dhankhar, who also serves as the chairman of the upper house of parliament, announced his resignation on the first day of the monsoon session, citing health concerns. His decision was conveyed to President Droupadi Murmu through a letter, in which he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the esteemed office.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution.” He further extended his deepest gratitude to the President for her unwavering support and wonderful working relationship during his tenure.
The abrupt nature of Dhankhar’s resignation has sparked intense speculation, with many questioning the true reasons behind his decision. Opposition leaders have expressed surprise, with some suggesting that there may be more to the resignation than meets the eye. Anand Dubey, spokesperson of the Shiv Sena (UBT) party, questioned the suddenness of the decision, stating, “What is going on in this government? This decision came without proper consultation or discussion. If health was the concern, the resignation could have been submitted a few days before the session or even after.”
Manish Tewari, an MP of India’s main opposition Congress party, described the move as “totally unexpected.” While acknowledging Dhankhar’s need to prioritize his health, Tewari added, “But, clearly, there is far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye.” Jairam Ramesh, another Congress MP, called Dhankhar’s resignation “unprecedented” and pointed to the absence of two ministers from an advisory committee meeting presided over by Dhankhar.
During his tenure, Dhankhar played a significant role in India’s parliamentary proceedings. He presided over the Rajya Sabha session and swore in new members, just hours before submitting his resignation. Dhankhar also received an impeachment notice against high court judge Yashwant Varma, signed by over 50 MPs. Despite his resignation, Dhankhar expressed pride in India’s global rise and phenomenal achievements, stating, “It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period. Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honour.”
With Dhankhar’s resignation, the vice president’s seat is now vacant. According to the Constitution, a bye-election for the vacant position should be conducted as early as possible. During this period, the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha or another member authorized by the President will assume the responsibilities of the Vice President.
President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Dhankhar’s resignation, and the Home Ministry has notified the resignation to the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed appreciation for Dhankhar’s service, highlighting his commitment to public service and wishing him good health.
