Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the beloved American actor best known for his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has tragically died at the age of 54 after an accidental drowning in Costa Rica.

According to reports from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ), Warner was swimming at Playa Cocles in Limón Province on Sunday, July 20, when he was swept away by a strong rip current. Beachgoers rushed to his aid, pulling him to shore, but despite frantic rescue efforts by the Costa Rican Red Cross, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The official cause of death was recorded as “asphyxia by submersion.”

Warner, who was on a family vacation, was reportedly with two other men when the incident occurred. The Red Cross confirmed it received an emergency alert around 2:10 p.m. local time and treated two other individuals, one of whom remains in critical condition.

Born on August 18, 1970, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Malcolm-Jamal Warner was named after civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. His breakout role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show (1984–1992) earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 and cemented his place as a cultural icon.

Beyond The Cosby Show, Warner enjoyed a diverse career, starring in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and most recently, FOX’s medical drama The Resident, where he played the charismatic Dr. AJ Austin. He was also an accomplished director and musician, winning a Grammy Award in 2015 for his spoken-word contribution to a Stevie Wonder cover, “Jesus Children of America.”

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans worldwide.

Viola Davis described Warner as “OUR son, OUR brother, OUR friend,” while actor Morris Chestnut praised his kindness, calling him “a genuine guy who welcomed everyone warmly.” Bill Cosby’s spokesperson said the comedian was “devastated” by the news, likening the loss to the 1997 killing of his own son, Ennis.

The NAACP also honored Warner, writing on social media, “#RestinPower… Your legacy will continue to inspire generations.”

Fox Entertainment, where Warner worked on The Resident, released a statement describing him as “an extraordinary talent and a cherished member of the FOX family.”

Despite his celebrity, Warner lived a largely private life, rarely sharing details about his family. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

His death is a significant loss to the entertainment industry, but his groundbreaking performances, cultural impact, and contributions to television and music will continue to resonate for years to come.
