The WTT Contender Lagos 2025 officially serves off today Tuesday, July 22, with the qualifying rounds commencing at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Now in its third consecutive edition, the prestigious World Table Tennis (WTT) event has once again brought global attention to Lagos, reinforcing the city’s status as a vibrant hub for international table tennis.

At the pre-tournament press conference held on Monday, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and President of ITTF Africa, Wahid Enitan Oshodi, expressed appreciation to World Table Tennis for entrusting Lagos with hosting duties once again.

“We are excited that WTT has placed its trust in us to host the third edition of WTT Contender Lagos,” Oshodi said.

“This event has firmly placed Lagos on the global table tennis map, thanks to the passionate support of our fans. It’s become one of the most exciting stops on the WTT Contender circuit.”

A Global Affair

Event supervisor Maher Ben Ahmed highlighted the tournament’s increasing international stature, noting the participation of athletes from Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.

“The presence of athletes from four continents is a testament to the tournament’s rising popularity. WTT Contender Lagos is now one of the most anticipated events in the WTT Series.”

Event manager Loh Yuan Yee praised the LOC’s meticulous planning, attributing the event’s continued success to the energy it generates among players and fans alike.

Event director Kweku Tandoh reaffirmed the team’s commitment to excellence, promising improvements in scale and quality in subsequent editions.

Elevating African Table Tennis

President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Ishaku Tikon, emphasized the tournament’s role in lifting the standard of the sport across Africa:

“Nigeria continues to play a leadership role in African table tennis, and the WTT Contender Lagos has been instrumental in raising the level of competition on the continent.”

The 2025 edition of WTT Contender Lagos features a prize pool of $100,000, drawing elite international competitors and promising thrilling action throughout the week.

As the main draw begins in the coming days, fans can expect world-class performances, intense rivalries, and another chapter in Lagos’ growing legacy as a premier destination on the global table tennis circuit.
