Over 1,000 athletes from 31 African countries have arrived in Abuja ahead of the 2025 African Karate Championship, set to run from July 21 to July 28 in Nigeria’s capital.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), Silas Agara, confirmed that 31 countries, including the host nation, would compete in four categories: cadet, junior, senior, and para-karate.
“These categories will feature athletes across various age groups—from cadets aged 14–15, juniors aged 16–17, to seniors and para-athletes aged 18 and above,” Agara explained.

He noted that preparations were in full swing and that most delegations had already arrived in Abuja.
“We’re happy to confirm that most of the countries who registered are now on ground. We’ve also received officials from several nations who are here to provide technical assistance for the championship,” Agara said.
He admitted that logistics posed challenges, especially around transportation, immigration, and accommodation, but added that the federation had worked tirelessly over the past week to ensure smooth arrangements for the visitors.
“We’ve had to sort out visas on arrival, arrange transport from hotels to venues, and ensure all teams are comfortably lodged. It hasn’t been easy, but I’m happy to say we are on course,” he added.
In addition to the competition, the General Assembly of the African Karate Federation will also take place in Abuja during the championship period.

Nigeria to Field 60 Athletes
Technical Director of the KFN, Dave Jegede, revealed that Nigeria will present 60 athletes across the different categories. He expressed confidence in the squad, citing the depth of experience and recent preparations.
“We anticipated the demands of hosting and have taken proactive steps. Our athletes have participated in four national and two regional championships in the buildup to this event,” Jegede said.
According to him, the Nigerian team includes African and Commonwealth medalists, and morale in camp is high.
“We’ve had gold, silver, and bronze medalists across various championships in our team. With the level of preparation and the quality of athletes we have, we’re confident Nigeria will make a strong statement at this year’s championship,” he added.
