President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to partake in the eighth-day prayer ceremony in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The president’s visit underscores the national significance of the event, as well as his respect for the revered monarch and the people of Ijebuland.

The announcement of President Tinubu’s departure was made public on Sunday through a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Dada Olusegun, the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media.

In his message, he wrote, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has left Abuja for Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.”

Oba Sikiru Adetona, one of Nigeria’s most esteemed traditional rulers, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.

His death marked the end of a historic reign that began in 1960, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs in Nigeria’s history. He was buried the next day in Ijebu-Ode, in line with Islamic customs that require the deceased to be interred promptly.

Throughout his reign, Oba Adetona was celebrated for his visionary leadership, steadfast integrity, and unwavering commitment to the development of Ijebuland.

His tenure saw the transformation of Ijebu communities through enhanced infrastructure, economic growth, and the promotion of cultural identity.

He was widely revered for his advocacy for peace, unity, and the preservation of the Yoruba heritage within the broader tapestry of Nigerian society.

In preparation for the solemn prayer event, security has been significantly heightened in Ijebu-Ode to ensure the safety of attendees and the smooth flow of activities.

Security personnel have been strategically deployed across critical locations, including the Dipo Dina International Stadium, the Awujale’s Palace, and the late monarch’s private residence in Igbeba.

The eighth-day prayer ceremony, which is a significant Islamic tradition, is scheduled to hold at the Dipo Dina International Stadium.

The event is expected to attract a high-profile assembly of dignitaries, including the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, prominent government officials, traditional rulers, and other distinguished personalities from across the nation, all converging to pay their last respects and celebrate the enduring legacy of the late Awujale.
