A potential tragedy was averted on Saturday, July 19, after Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, rendered swift assistance to members of the Tunisian delegation involved in a road accident during the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships in Abeokuta.
According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), the accident occurred while the Tunisian athletes were being transported from the competition venue to the Games Village. Critically, the vehicle was not part of the officially designated convoy, which typically includes security and medical escort services.
In a fortunate twist of fate, Governor Abiodun happened to be on the same route at the time of the incident and personally stopped to offer immediate assistance.
The injured athletes were promptly transported to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, for first aid, and later transferred to another facility for comprehensive treatment.
Shortly after, both Governor Abiodun and the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade arrived at the hospital to oversee the situation firsthand and ensure the affected athletes received appropriate care. The NSC has also confirmed that the DG remains in active communication with the Tunisian team leadership.
NSC Statement
In an official statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director General, the NSC extended its sympathies and well wishes to the injured athletes, their families, and the Tunisian delegation.
“We deeply regret the unfortunate incident and wish the injured athletes a quick and full recovery. The safety and well-being of all athletes and participants remain our topmost priority,” the statement read.
The NSC also praised the swift intervention of Governor Abiodun, medical personnel, and security agencies, whose timely response was instrumental in managing the emergency effectively.
Investigation Underway
While the immediate concern remains the recovery of the injured, questions have been raised about the deviation from the prescribed transportation protocol. The NSC is expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s unauthorized movement without the necessary escort.
The CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships is hosting young athletes from across the continent in Abeokuta Ogun State, and the NSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all visiting delegations.
