The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has commended the Super Falcons of Nigeria following their dominant 5-0 victory over Zambia in the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing a place in the semifinals for a record-extending 13th time.
The Nigerian team put on a masterclass performance at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, Morocco on Friday evening, taking a commanding lead in the first half with goals from Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo.
The second half saw the Super Falcons continue their dominance, as veteran defender Tosin Demehin struck in the 68th minute before substitute Folashade Ijamilusi completed the rout with a stoppage-time goal in the 91st minute to cap off the five star performance.
While reacting to the victory today, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, praised the team’s outstanding performance and expressed confidence in their ability to keep going and reclaim the continental crown.
“Securing a semifinal spot without conceding a single goal, while scoring nine so far, speaks volumes about the quality of this team,” said Amadu, who represents the Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency.
“We are just two wins away from reclaiming the title we last won in 2018.”
Amadu also reassured the team of overwhelming national support as they continue their campaign for a historic tenth WAFCON title.
“The Federal Government, the National Assembly, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and indeed the entire 230 million Nigerians stand firmly behind the Super Falcons. We believe in their ability to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football,” he added.
For the semifinal showdown, the Super Falcons will await the winner of the quarterfinal clash between defending champions the Banyana Banyana of South Africa and Senegal, scheduled for tonight, Saturday 19th July at Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morroco.
