Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has formally severed ties with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking the end of his long-standing association with the party.

His resignation, confirmed through an official letter dated July 12, 2025, was submitted to the Chairman of Ward 4 in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, his political base.

The senator, who is serving his second term in the Senate, is widely regarded as one of the most influential political figures in Osun East, especially within the Ijesa land.

He has, over the years, built a formidable political structure and was known as a strong supporter of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration in Osun State.

His decision to quit the PDP has therefore come as a major development in the state’s political landscape, potentially reshaping alignments within the ruling party.

In his resignation letter, Senator Fadahunsi explained that his departure was necessitated by the worsening state of affairs within the PDP at the national level. He expressed deep concern over the unresolved and persistent internal crises, factional struggles, and the series of court cases that have continued to destabilize the party since the 2023 general elections.

According to him, these challenges have rendered the party ineffective and incapable of providing the political platform needed to serve his constituents effectively.

His letter reads in part: “I wish to formally notify you that I am resigning my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, due to the irreparable and irreconcilable differences, as well as the protracted legal battles that have bedeviled the party at the national level following the 2023 general elections.

“This decision was not taken lightly. After wide consultations and engagements with my political associates, family members, and trusted friends, I have come to the conclusion that remaining in the PDP is no longer tenable.”

Senator Fadahunsi appealed to the local party leadership to accept his resignation in good faith, stating that it was made in the best interest of his political career, his supporters, and the people of Osun East whom he represents.

Political observers believe that Fadahunsi’s exit from the PDP may have significant implications, not just for the party’s strength in Osun State, but also for the political future of the senator himself.

Speculations are already rife about his next political move, with many suggesting that he might be aligning with another political party to safeguard his political relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, the development has sparked reactions among PDP members in Osun State, with some expressing disappointment over his decision, while others have called on the party leadership to swiftly address the underlying issues that continue to weaken the party’s cohesion and stability at the national level.

Senator Fadahunsi’s resignation underscores the deepening cracks within the PDP, raising fresh concerns about the party’s readiness and capacity to reclaim national power amidst its internal turmoil.
