Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and his wife, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, have been honoured with prestigious chieftaincy titles in Akure Kingdom.

The Deji of Akure, Oba (Dr.) Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, on Friday bestowed upon them the titles of Aare Omoluabi of Akure Kingdom and Yeye Aare Omoluabi of Akure Kingdom, respectively.

The colourful ceremony, held in Akure, the Ondo State capital, was graced by dignitaries from Oyo State and other parts of the country. The conferment coincided with the 10th anniversary of Oba Aladelusi’s reign as the Deji of Akure, a milestone Governor Makinde personally congratulated the monarch on.
In his remarks, Governor Makinde expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, describing the honour as both a privilege and a renewed call to contribute meaningfully to the development of Akure Kingdom.
He reminisced about his ties to the land, recalling that he was just ten years old when he visited Akure in 1977, an experience that reinforced his connection to his ancestral roots.
“For me and my wife, this is a deeply humbling honour. It is not just a title, but a call to service and a commitment to the progress of Akure Kingdom.
They say a prophet is often not honoured in his own land, but today Akure Kingdom has chosen to honour one of its own, and I deeply appreciate that,” he said.
Governor Makinde also acknowledged his mother, Mrs Victoria Modupe Alo, for insisting on being present at the ceremony, a gesture he said reflected the importance of the event for his family.
He pledged personal contributions towards the completion of key developmental projects in Akure, particularly the ongoing construction of the Akure Town Hall and the modernisation of the Akure Palace.
According to him, these projects are crucial in preserving the heritage of the kingdom and in marking the Deji’s decade on the throne with tangible transformation.
“I will do my part to support the completion of the Akure Town Hall and the palace modernisation efforts. These are not just structures, but legacies that will endure for generations and signal the remarkable 10-year reign of our revered Kabiyesi,” he added.
The occasion not only celebrated Governor Makinde’s new traditional title but also reinforced the historical and cultural ties between him and the people of Akure, solidifying his commitment to the progress and upliftment of the kingdom.
