The Gombe State Police Command has confirmed the unfortunate death of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clement Yunana, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Tumfure, located within the Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.

According to an official statement released on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Buhari Abdullahi, the late officer was attached to the Railway Police Outstation under the Bajoga Division. His death has cast a pall of grief over his family, colleagues, and the entire police community.

Providing details of the incident, DSP Abdullahi stated that the tragic event took place at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, near the Matrix Filling Station in Tumfure.

Preliminary investigations indicate that an unidentified vehicle, reportedly heading from the Bauchi axis en route to Gombe Metropolis, struck ASP Yunana as he was attempting to cross the road.

“The driver did not stop to assist the victim or even check his condition but instead fled the scene, leaving the officer in a critical state,” the police spokesperson reported.

Following the accident, ASP Yunana was promptly rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, for urgent medical attention. Sadly, despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead by the medical team.

In response to this unfortunate event, the Gombe State Police Command has initiated a full-scale investigation to uncover the identity of the driver and the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. DSP Abdullahi emphasized that efforts are being intensified to track down the perpetrator, and he called on members of the public to provide any useful information that could assist the police in their ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Gombe State, CP Bello Yahaya, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officer.

On behalf of the entire Command, he extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late ASP Yunana. The Commissioner described the deceased as a dedicated and committed officer whose service will be sorely missed.

The police have also reiterated their appeal to the public to remain vigilant and cooperative by sharing any leads that could help bring the fleeing driver to justice.
