The Federal Government has announced substantial cash rewards for Nigerian athletes participating in the ongoing CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, Ogun State, in a move aimed at motivating young talents and driving Team Nigeria’s quest for podium finishes.

The incentive package, unveiled on Day 2 of the championship, will see gold medalists receive ₦1,000,000, silver medalists ₦750,000, and bronze medalists ₦500,000.

The announcement was made by the National Sports Commission (NSC) as part of its broader commitment to nurturing grassroots talent and encouraging high performance in youth athletics.

Present at the MKO Abiola International Stadium to deliver the news in person were NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, both of whom also took time to interact with Team Nigeria athletes and coaching staff.

Speaking during the announcement, Mallam Dikko praised the energy and dedication of the young athletes representing Nigeria:

“Their drive and passion are evident in every race and event. We are proud of their commitment, and this incentive is just a token of our appreciation. Excellence must be rewarded.”

He emphasized the need for long-term investment in youth development, adding:

“Our athletes deserve more than just applause. When they put in the work and fly our flag high, the least we can do is show tangible appreciation. This initiative is also a message that the government stands solidly behind them.”

Hon. Bukola Olopade, who also serves as the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, echoed similar sentiments. He stressed the importance of sustained support, especially at the developmental stage of an athlete’s career:

“Today’s U18 and U20 athletes are tomorrow’s Olympians and Commonwealth champions. We must build them up early with the right structure, motivation, and welfare packages. This is how sporting nations are built.”

Officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) hailed the initiative as a welcome development, calling it a significant step toward not only rewarding current performance but also cultivating a culture of excellence and national pride among Nigeria’s next generation of athletes.

The five-day continental championship, which has drawn athletes from over 35 African countries, is being seen as a key scouting ground for future stars. Team Nigeria has already made a strong impression, with several podium finishes across sprint, field, and relay events.

With the new cash incentives, expectations are even higher as the nation hopes to finish among the top-ranked countries on the medals table when the competition wraps up later this week.
