Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has admitted that Zambia pose a serious threat ahead of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 quarter-final clash today Friday 18th July, but remains fully confident in his team’s ability to secure victory and progress.

The high-stakes encounter between Nigeria and the Copper Queens will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco, marking the first quarter-final fixture of the tournament.

Respect, Not Fear

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Madugu acknowledged Zambia’s growing status in African women’s football, particularly their attacking firepower led by the reigning African Women’s Footballer of the Year arbra Banda and Bay FC’s forward Racheal Kundananji.

“We’ve studied them closely and know their strengths,” Madugu said. “They have pace, technical ability, and confidence going forward. But we have our strategies in place to neutralize their key threats. We respect their quality — but we are not intimidated.”

Madugu emphasized that the nine-time African champions are well-prepared, mentally and tactically, and are focusing on taking things one step at a time.

“We’re in a good place as a team. Our focus is on each match as it comes. If you want to win this competition, you must be ready to beat the best teams — and Zambia is one of them.”

A Shot at Redemption

Today’s heavyweight clash will be more than just a semifinal ticket — it offers a chance at redemption for Nigeria, who lost to Zambia in the third-place match of the 2022 edition, also held in Morocco. That defeat denied the Falcons a podium finish for only the second time in the tournament’s history.

Since then, the Zambians have continued to improve, reaching the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and emerging as one of Africa’s most dangerous sides. However, Nigeria — buoyed by a mix of experience and youth — remain determined to reclaim their place at the top.

All Eyes on Casablanca

With stars like Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne, and Rasheedat Ajibade expected to feature, Nigeria will count on its depth and pedigree to get past the Copper Queens and take one step closer to a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM local time (GMT+1), and the winner will advance to the semifinals, edging closer to continental glory.
